University of Groningen The bacterial sec machinery

چکیده
It has been proposed that the bitopic membrane protein SecG undergoes topology inversion during translocation of (pre)proteins via SecYEG. Here we show that SecG covalently cross-linked to SecY cannot invert its topology while remaining fully functional in protein translocation. Our results strongly disfavor topology inversion of SecG during protein translocation.

Stepwise evolution of the Sec machinery in Proteobacteria.
The Sec machinery facilitates the translocation of proteins across and into biological membranes. In several of the Proteobacteria, this machinery contains accessory features that are not present in any other bacterial division. The genomic distribution of these features in the context of bacterial phylogeny suggests that the Sec machinery has evolved in discrete steps. The canonical Sec machin...

Dissimilar mechanistic background of peripheral and orofacial hyperkinesia in patients with Parkinson’s disease and levodopa-induced dyskinesia
Introduction: Long-term levodopa treatment of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is frequently complicated by spontaneously occurring involuntary muscle movements called dyskinesia. The exact pathological mechanism of this complication has not yet been elucidated. We have previously demonstrated that in PD patients the vulnerability to develop peripheral but not orofacial dyskinesia is associated w...

متن کاملAdopting New International Health Instruments – What Can We Learn From the FCTC?; Comment on “The Legal Strength of International Health Instruments - What It Brings to Global Health Governance?”
This Commentary forms a response to Nikogosian’s and Kickbusch’s forward-looking perspective about the legal strength of international health instruments. Building on their arguments, in this commentary we consider what we can learn from the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) for the adoption of new legal international health instruments.
